Course Description
The program is comprised of 2 sections:
1. Intensive ESL study at A.C.E.
2. Classes in TESOL at the School of Teaching English as a Second Language

Details:
1. Intensive ESL study at A.C.E. Language Institutes on the SPU campus. Students will enter the program at either level 5 or level 6. To progress to the School of Teaching ESL TESOL Certificate program, students must satisfactorily complete level 6 with a B grade or higher. Level 6 is the highest level of our intensive academic preparatory English program. Graduation from level 6 qualifies a student to enroll in the School of Teaching ESL TESOL Certificate program.

Students will earn Seattle University credit and receive the Seattle University Certificate in TESOL upon completion of Intensive I with a 3.0 grade point average.

2. The Certificate in TESOL Program at The School of Teaching English as a Second Language is an intensive 4-week program requiring a high level of student commitment and dedication. Classes are from 9am to 3pm daily with 3-6 hours of homework each day, including weekends. The Intensive I Program consists of the following classes:

EPDES 930 TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE;
THEORY AND APPLICATION (3 credits)

This course addresses the general principles of language acquisition and guidelines for teaching English as a second or foreign language. The specific classroom application of principles and guidelines will be emphasized through lesson and unit plan development.
EPDES 931 METHODS OF LANGUAGE ACQUISITION (3 credits)
Upon completion of this course, participants will be better prepared to choose approaches, methods, and activities in diverse and challenging teaching situations. Specific methods (traditional and contemporary) for language acquisition will be analyzed and evaluated for effectiveness with different student populations, skill areas, and proficiency levels.
EPDES 932 TEACHING GRAMMAR TO ESOL STUDENTS (3 credits)
Course is designed to provide the instructor of ESOL with tools to facilitate grammar acquisition. Participants will learn grammar rules and develop strategies for instructing ESOL students in grammar.
EPDES 933 MATERIALS SELECTION AND DEVELOPMENT IN TES0L (3 credits)
Participants will survey existing ESOL materials to become familiar with resources for teaching. In addition, participants will explore guidelines regarding teacher-created and student-created materials. Creation of instructional materials is required during the class.
